Pennsylvania Avenue, the ceremonial route between the Capitol and the White House, was where Union troops most often paraded for the public during the Civil War. This image is a photographic reproduction of a drawing dated July 1, 1881, so it reflects an artist's later view of wartime Washington rather than a camera's record of the event. The copy itself was likely made sometime between 1900 and 1950. The most famous procession on this street was the Grand Review of May 1865, when Union armies marched down the avenue to mark the war's end.
