Pennsylvania Avenue runs between the White House and the Capitol, and this elevated view looks east down its length toward the Capitol at the far end. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company Collection, the work of a commercial studio that documented Washington street scenes, government buildings and public life for many years. Its date is recorded only as around 1920, so it likely captures the avenue in the years after the First World War, when the city was growing quickly and cars and streetcars were becoming a common sight on its main thoroughfare.
