Pennsylvania Avenue, the broad boulevard linking the Capitol and the White House, is the subject of this view, taken sometime between 1900 and 1910 when the street's commercial buildings were a prominent part of its character. The glass dry plate negative, measuring 8 by 10 inches, came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American cities and scenery to publishers and tourists in the early twentieth century. The State Historical Society of Colorado gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1949, and its handwritten marking and company number help place it within the firm's large output.
