This view of Pennsylvania Avenue, the broad boulevard linking the Capitol and the White House, shows a stretch of the city's commercial life in the years before 1910. The glass negative is an 8 x 10 inch plate, and its handwritten "945 G" marking may point to a location or a reference number, though the record does not say which. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, made many street scenes like this one for sale to travelers and collectors. Its catalog was later donated to the Library of Congress, and this plate arrived there as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
