Georgetown rises across the Potomac in this 1865 view taken from the Virginia shore, with the Aqueduct Bridge running along the extreme right edge of the frame. The bridge carried the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal's water over the river, and its stone arches tie the image to the city's early transportation links. The picture was made as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that demanded quick work in the field and produced sharp, detailed plates. It comes from a Civil War-era series compiled by Milhollen and Mugridge and issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, which documented the capital during its wartime years.
