A ferry loaded with wagons crosses the Potomac in this 1860 stereograph, with the Aqueduct Bridge visible in the distance. The bridge carried the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal over the river between Georgetown and the Virginia shore, so the scene links the canal, the bridge, and the ferry that worked the same stretch of water. Made with the wet collodion process on glass plates, the two halves form a pair meant to produce a three-dimensional view in a stereoscope. Although it predates the Civil War by a year, the picture was later grouped with the war photographs, and it shows the river traffic of a city on the edge of that conflict.
