The Long Bridge carried the main road and rail traffic between the capital and Virginia, so this view from the Washington side shows one of the city's most important wartime crossings. During the Civil War the bridge was constantly busy with troops, wagons, and supplies moving south to Union armies camped across the river. The picture was made in 1865 on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate within minutes. The print appears in a series issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, one of several firms that sold views of wartime Washington to a public eager to see the places in the news.
