The Chain Bridge crossed the Potomac River between Georgetown and the Virginia shore, making it one of the main routes into Washington from the south and west. Its suspension span made it a distinctive feature of the river, and during the Civil War it carried Union troops, wagons, and supplies into the capital's defenses. This 1865 view was made from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate on site, which is why such images from the war years are often valued for their precise detail of roads, bridgework, and the surrounding landscape.
