From the grounds of Arlington House, this view looks past the Potomac River toward the Washington Monument, which rises in the distance across the water. The mansion was built for George Washington Parke Custis and later became the home of his son-in-law, Robert E. Lee. During the Civil War the estate was taken over for burials, and it became Arlington National Cemetery. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1910 and 1920, when the firm was selling large numbers of American scenic views.
