Night views of the Potomac are less common than daylight scenes in the Detroit Publishing Company's Washington holdings, and this one lets the river's dark surface and the city's lights carry the composition. The image was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, a format that required long exposures, and it dates from between 1895 and 1910. The company sold scenic views of American cities and waterways to a national market in those years, so the picture reflects both that commercial demand and the capital's riverfront as it looked at the turn of the century. The State Historical Society of Colorado gave the negative in 1949.
