Looking across the open ground of Potomac Park, this view keeps the Washington Monument in sight above the tree-lined drive, with the Washington Channel visible beyond. Much of the park was built on reclaimed tidal flats along the Potomac, and the broad walks shown here reflect the effort to turn that marshy shore into public recreation space in the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document cities, parks and scenery, and this glass negative is part of that broad survey of American places.
