Lafayette Square, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, is home to this equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson, the seventh president. Clark Mills's bronze was unveiled in 1853 and its rearing horse became one of the best-known monuments in the capital. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities, parks and landmarks around the turn of the twentieth century, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1920. Its large format captures the statue and the surrounding park in fine detail.
