Rochambeau's bronze figure stands in Lafayette Park, the square across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, and this view of it comes from the Underwood & Underwood studio, a firm known for mass-produced stereoviews and news photographs in the decades around 1900. Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, commanded the French expeditionary force that helped American forces win the Revolutionary War, and his army's role in the siege at Yorktown in 1781 was decisive. The statue's placement near the Lafayette monument reflects the Franco-American alliance that the park's sculptures were meant to honor.
