The statue shown here is of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French officer who fought for the American colonies in the Revolutionary War, and it stands in Lafayette Square, directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. France gave the bronze to the United States, and it was unveiled in 1891. This stereograph was published around 1900 by H.C. White Co., a Vermont firm that produced many views of American cities for home stereo viewers. Looking through the paired images produces a sense of depth, letting the viewer see the statue and its tree-lined setting as a visitor of the period would have.
