Few Washington houses stood closer to power than this one, which faced Lafayette Square within sight of the White House. Built in the mid-1880s for historian Henry Adams and diplomat John Hay, the Romanesque Revival residence was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, whose heavy stone massing set it apart from the square's classical townhouses. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent photographer of American architecture, made this cyanotype in the early 1900s, and the blue-toned process gives the stonework a flat, graphic quality. The house was demolished in 1927, so images like this one are now among the best records of how it looked.
