The Octagon, at the corner of New York Avenue and 18th Street NW, is one of the capital's most unusual houses, with walls set at angles rather than the usual rectangle. William Thornton, the first architect of the Capitol, designed it around 1800 for Col. John Tayloe III. After British troops burned the White House in 1814, President James Madison lived here for several months, and the American Institute of Architects has used the building as its headquarters since 1899. This 1913 view draws attention to the rows of windows that light its angled façade.
