The circular vestibule pictured here gives the Octagon its name, an entry hall set within a house whose plan rests on angled walls rather than square corners. Designed by William Thornton and completed around 1800, the house served as James Madison's temporary residence after the British burned the White House in 1814. This 1913 copyright deposit captures the interior in the years before the American Institute of Architects, which acquired the building in 1902, began caring for it as a historic site.
