The Octagon, at 18th and New York Avenue NW, takes its name from the eight-sided plan of its main rooms, an unusual shape for a Washington townhouse of the period. Designed by Dr. William Thornton, the first architect of the U.S. Capitol, it was built around 1799 to 1800 for Col. John Tayloe III, a wealthy Virginia planter. The floor plan shows how the rooms radiate from a central hall and how the house was fitted to its irregular lot. After the British burned the White House in 1814, President and Mrs. Madison lived here for several months, and the American Institute of Architects has occupied the house since the late 1890s.
