Few buildings in Washington share the Octagon's eight-sided plan, which sets it apart from the rectangular houses around it. William Thornton designed the house, completed around 1800 for plantation owner John Tayloe III, and it later sheltered President James Madison after the British burned the White House in 1814. This copyright deposit, dated January 1913, shows the building in the early twentieth century, when the American Institute of Architects owned it. The institute had acquired the house in 1902.
