This engraving shows the White House's exterior in the mid-1870s, when Ulysses S. Grant was president and the building was roughly seventy years past its rebuilding after the British burned it in 1814. Wood engravings like this one were widely reproduced in illustrated newspapers and magazines of the period, so the image would have reached readers who had never visited Washington. The record credits H.H. Nichols as engraver and notes a copyright held by D. B. R. Keim, which places the print within the commercial trade in city views that flourished after the Civil War.
