The White House's Executive Mansion, the name used on early records and in many nineteenth-century illustrations, stands here as one of several views of the same building in the Washington DC series. The President's House was burned by British troops in August 1814 during the War of 1812, and the exterior was rebuilt and completed by 1817 under architect James Hoban, who had designed the original building. Its sandstone facade, painted white after the fire to cover scorch marks, gave the residence the name it is best known by today. Architectural views like this one were popular with visitors and print buyers who wanted a record of the nation's capital.
