A June 1961 wire photo of John F. Kennedy on crutches is an unusual view of a president who rarely let his physical difficulties appear in public. Kennedy's chronic back problems, rooted in a wartime injury and later surgeries, often required crutches or a brace, though the White House seldom discussed them. Here he makes his way to a Washington conference on international economic and social development, accompanied by Andrew T. Hatcher of the White House press staff. The picture came in over the United Press International telephoto wire, a reminder of how quickly news photographs traveled in the early 1960s.
