Few pictures in the collection show a visitor leaving the White House on a November afternoon in 1924, and this glass negative records one. Its title names the mining engineer and businessman John Hays Hammond, a well-known figure in American public life in the 1920s, and dates the exposure to November 6, 1924. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington for roughly two decades, made many such portraits of officials and prominent visitors for its archive. The negative shows the streaks and blemishes that come from age in the original emulsion, which are part of what the glass itself can tell a viewer about its making.
