Photographed at the White House on November 8, 1924, this glass negative shows Representative M.B. Madden of Illinois with a man identified as Frank Stearns, though the record notes those names come from unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company. The date falls four days after the presidential election that gave Calvin Coolidge a full term, when Washington was busy with political news. The National Photo Company worked in the capital in the early twentieth century, documenting officials, visitors and public events on glass plates like this one. Streaks and blemishes on the surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coating.
