Senator Hiram Bingham of Connecticut is the man pictured here, photographed outside the White House in Washington on January 9, 1925. Bingham was a Yale historian who had led expeditions to the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru in 1911, and he later entered national politics. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of officials and visitors to the capital. This print comes from a glass negative, and streaks and blemishes from the aging of its original coating are visible, which is typical of surviving plates from that era.
