The South Lawn of the White House, shown here as a glass-plate negative made roughly a decade before the First World War ended, records a part of the grounds that most visitors never saw up close. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its large-format views of American landmarks, produced thousands of such plates for sale as postcards and stereographs. Its catalog number and the "G 5047" stamped on the negative help date and sort the image within that collection. The view reflects an era when the public still approached the executive mansion as a tourist site, with lawns open for strolling and photographers free to frame the building from the grounds.
