Taken at the White House in Washington on October 4, 1923, this glass negative records members of the Military Order of the World War, a veterans' society of men who had held commissions in the First World War. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington street life, official events and visiting groups during the 1910s and 1920s, made the exposure on a large glass plate, a format prized for its sharp detail. Calvin Coolidge had taken office only that August, so the picture captures the capital in the early months of his presidency. Streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original coating are visible across the plate, as is common with glass negatives of this period.
