Hawaiian swimmer Warren Kealoha is the subject here, photographed at the White House in Washington in August 1924. He was one of several Hawaiian swimmers who drew mainland attention between the world wars, a period when Duke Kahanamoku's international fame had put Hawaiian athletes in the public eye. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded public life in the capital during the 1910s and 1920s, made the picture. Its glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes typical of aging coatings, which add to its character as a record of that moment.
