A luncheon at the White House on August 14, 1924, marked the nomination of President Calvin Coolidge, who had taken office in August 1923 after the death of Warren G. Harding. Republicans had nominated him for a full term at their convention that June, and the November election was still ahead. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded official life in the capital in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating, which is worth noticing when judging the image's clarity.
