This picture is set apart by its named subject, Prof. David Todd, the Amherst College astronomer, photographed at the White House in September 1924, though the title comes from unverified data supplied by the National Photo Company. Todd was known for leading solar eclipse expeditions, and a visit to Washington in the 1920s would have placed him among the many scientists, officials and visitors who passed through the capital. The National Photo Company produced thousands of Washington views during the 1910s and 1920s, and this glass negative may show the streaks and blemishes that come with aging coatings on plates of this kind.
