This crowd gathered outside the White House on August 30, 1924, to catch a glimpse of the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII, who was touring North America that year. Visits by European royalty drew large public audiences to the capital, and the scene shows how many ordinary Washingtonians turned out for the chance to see a visiting heir to the British throne. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed the city's streets, monuments and public events in the 1910s and 1920s. Its glass negative also shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age, which are part of what makes it a physical record of the period.
