Taken at the White House on September 20, 1924, this glass negative names a secretary identified only as Wilburn, a title the record marks as unverified. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public life in the capital in the early twentieth century, made the exposure on a plate no larger than five by seven inches. Faint streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings, a reminder of how fragile these negatives are.
