Few pictures on this board show a diplomat at the White House, and this glass negative records Hon. Myron T. Herrick there on October 2, 1924, during Calvin Coolidge's presidency. Herrick, a former governor of Ohio, was serving as United States ambassador to France at the time, so a visit to Washington would have carried diplomatic weight. The picture was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, buildings and street life in the capital over several decades. The negative shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
