This 1924 glass negative shows Lillian Mae Erbe, captioned as Miss Philadelphia, photographed at the White House in Washington on October 29. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that worked in the capital for decades, made many portraits of visitors, officials and local events. The caption came from data attached to the negative, and the sitter's identity has not been fully verified, so the name is best read as the studio's record. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from age and deterioration of the original coatings, and they are part of how the plate looks today.
