A wheeled kiosk moves along the street in front of the White House in this December 1921 view, captured on a single glass plate. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington's streets and public buildings in the 1910s and 1920s, made the negative, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Warren G. Harding had taken office as president earlier that year, so the scene shows the capital in the early months of his administration. Look for streaks and small blemishes across the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
