Harris & Ewing, the Washington studio founded in 1905 by George W. Harris and Richard P. Ewing, made this portrait of a visitor connected with the White House, a setting the firm photographed often. The studio built its reputation on portraits of senators, diplomats, officials, and the people who came to the capital to see them, and its work documents the city's public and social life across the first half of the twentieth century. Studio portraits like this one were typically posed against plain or lightly decorated backdrops, so the sitter's dress, expression, and posture carry much of the information. Looking closely at those details is a good way to read the era's conventions of formal portraiture.
