In June 1939, Washington studio Harris & Ewing photographed a living re-creation of an old portrait of Daniel Boone, the frontiersman whose tales of Kentucky wilderness made him one of the best-known figures of early America. The title's phrase "come to life" suggests a costumed performer posed to match the painted original, a kind of tableau that was popular at the time for civic events and publicity. Harris & Ewing, founded in Washington in 1905, built its reputation on news and portrait photographs of government officials and public occasions, which makes this image a useful record of how the capital presented its history to the public just before the United States entered the 1940s.
