The caption on this 1939 portrait, dated May 16, identifies its subject as a steel industry head answering to a senator, a reminder of how often Washington in that decade called business leaders before congressional committees. The studio behind it, Harris & Ewing, was one of the city's best-known portrait and press photographers, and its work from this period captured many officials, executives and visitors who passed through the capital. Because the caption is brief and partly garbled, the exact name and the occasion are not fully clear from the record alone. The picture is still worth looking at for its formal posing and for what it shows of the studio's approach to official portraiture in the late 1930s.
