The plaque on the exterior of the Octagon House marks a building whose eight-sided plan set it apart on New York Avenue in Washington. William Thornton designed the house, completed around 1800 for plantation owner John Tayloe III, and it gained lasting fame when James and Dolley Madison used it as a temporary White House after British forces burned the executive mansion in 1814. The American Institute of Architects acquired the property in 1902 and has since preserved it as a historic house museum. This National Photo Company view, one of many the firm made of Washington landmarks in the early twentieth century, records how the building looked when its historic role was being publicized.
