The Octagon House stands at the corner of New York Avenue and 18th Street in Washington, D.C., and was completed in 1799 for Colonel John Tayloe III, a wealthy Virginia planter. Its eight-sided plan and wedge-shaped rooms broke with the rectangular houses common in the young capital. The building became notable during the War of 1812, when President James Madison and his wife Dolley stayed there after the British burned the White House, and it later served as a headquarters for the American Institute of Architects.
