Decatur House stands on the north side of Lafayette Square, across from the White House. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, one of the country's first professional architects, designed it in 1818 for Stephen Decatur, the naval hero of the War of 1812, and it was among the most elegant private residences in the young capital. Decatur died in a duel in 1820, and the house later passed to the Beale family. It came to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1956 and is now open as a museum.
