The dining room of John R. McLean's house at 1500 I Street Northwest, with its mantel and cupboard, is the focus of this view. McLean, a newspaper publisher who owned the Washington Post, lived in the house during a period when Washington's wealthy families filled their homes with elaborate woodwork and imported furnishings. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented Washington architecture and interiors for much of her career, made the picture around 1907. Views like this are valuable today because they record interior decoration that was often altered or lost as tastes changed.
