Staircase details seldom get a picture of their own, but this view of the John R. McLean house at 1500 I Street NW focuses on the woodwork inside the residence. McLean, who owned the Washington Post and the Cincinnati Enquirer, was one of the wealthy men building grand homes in the capital around 1900. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent photographer of the period, made the image around 1907 as part of her documentation of Washington architecture and interiors. Look closely at the balusters, the newel post, and the curve of the railing, which show how elite households used skilled craftsmanship to signal status.
