The subject here is the mantel in the dining room of John R. McLean's house at 1500 I Street NW in Washington, a detail the photographer chose to isolate rather than the whole room. McLean, a newspaper publisher who later controlled the *Washington Post*, was one of the capital's prominent residents in the early twentieth century, and his home was the kind of showpiece that wealthy families of the period used to display taste and status. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who made this view around 1907, specialized in photographing architecture and interiors, often to record fine woodwork, carving and furnishings. Her close study of a single mantel shows how much attention Gilded Age and Progressive Era households gave to the fireplace as a focal point of a formal room.
