A crowded room hung floor to ceiling with paintings is the defining feature of this view of the Parker Mann house in Washington, D.C. The photograph is part of Frances Benjamin Johnston's work from the 1890s through the early 1900s, when she recorded the interiors of the capital's homes and studios. Its caption tracings, including "Art Galleries" and "Artists Studios," suggest the room was valued as a space for displaying art. The cyanotype process, which produces the image's distinctive blue tones, was inexpensive and widely used at the time, so the print also shows how photographers documented domestic interiors before color photography.
