The Red Room is one of the formal parlors on the State floor of the White House, named for its crimson silk wall covering and furnishings. This stereograph, published around 1906 by W.S. Smith of the Standard Scenic Company as card No. 1516, shows the room as visitors of the period would have seen it, with its upholstered chairs, draped windows and carefully arranged decorative pieces. Stereo cards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a double-lens viewer to give a sense of depth, so interior views of famous rooms such as this one were a popular way to tour the presidential residence from home. The record's caption notes are unverified, so the exact date and vantage point should be treated with some caution.
