This photograph shows the music room of the John R. McLean house at 1500 I Street NW in Washington, D.C., with cut flowers arranged in the room. McLean was the publisher and owner of the *Washington Post* and the son of a prominent Cincinnati newspaper family, and his residence was one of the large private houses in the city's downtown district around 1907. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented architecture and interiors in Washington during this period, made the picture. Such images record how wealthy households furnished and decorated their rooms in the early 1900s, when flowers, instruments and upholstered furniture signaled a family's taste and social standing.
