The dining room of the Larz Anderson house on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, one of the interiors of this Beaux-Arts mansion that Frances Benjamin Johnston documented. Larz Anderson, a diplomat, and his wife Isabel built the house as a setting for entertaining, and its formal rooms were meant to show the couple's social and political standing in the capital. Johnston, one of the most prominent architectural and interior photographers of her era, recorded such rooms with a careful eye for furnishings and light. The house later became headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati, which keeps the interiors largely as the Andersons arranged them.
