The ballroom in the Larz Anderson house is the focus here, a formal interior in the Anderson residence on Dupont Circle in Washington. Larz Anderson, a diplomat who lived from 1866 to 1937, and his wife Isabel built the mansion as a showcase for entertaining and for their collection of European decorative arts. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most accomplished photographers working in the early twentieth century, documented many Washington interiors and buildings, and her pictures preserve the architectural detail of rooms like this one. The couple bequeathed the house to the Society of the Cincinnati, which still uses it today.
