The record identifies this as a view of an apartment house at Dupont Circle, the second in a series of Washington, D.C., architectural images. The circle takes its name from Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, whose memorial fountain was dedicated there in 1884. In the decades that followed, the neighborhood around the circle filled with large apartment buildings and townhouses as the city grew northwest of the White House. Such buildings are worth noticing for their street-facing facades, which show how urban residents of the period lived in a dense, fashionable district.
